Disability Wales attended the Houses of Parliament on May 24th to give oral evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights Inquiry into implementation of the right to Independent Living.

National policies on Independent Living have been introduced in England and Scotland, but not in Wales. A debate in the National Assembly on 12 May 2010 established unanimous cross-party support for the principles of Disability Wales’ Independent Living NOW! campaign, which called for a National Strategy on Independent Living.

A Disability Wales petition to show support for a National Strategy on Independent Living was signed by 719 people across Wales. The petition is being considered by the National Assembly’s Petitions Committee.

Independent Living enables us as disabled people to achieve our own goals and live our own lives in the way that we choose for ourselves” (Disability Wales, 2010)
