Getting you to hospital

The Welsh Ambulance Services Trust (WAST) is looking at ways they can improve the Non Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) in Wales.

The Welsh Ambulance Service runs a service called Patient Care Services (PCS) that takes people to and from outpatient appointments at clinics, and day
centres. They make over 1.5 million journeys every year for patients across Wales.

Suggested developments

  • Sending a text message to remind patients of  their appointment and how to cancel  transport if not required
  • Sending a text message on the day of travel about the estimated time of pick up for both  the journey to and from the appointment
  • Introducing a free phone telephone number and Online service for patients to cancel transport prior to travel which will be available 24 hours, all year round.
  • Having an enhanced Patient Transport Service for patients who require a higher level of responsiveness and punctuality for their journey, for example, renal dialysis, oncology treatment and other specialist treatment for appointments between 7am-10pm, Monday to Saturday, including Bank Holidays.

The people involved in this project meet every month to talk about important
areas that will help to improve the service.

The next steps – what do you think?
