The NHS says up to 3,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year.<\/p>\n<p>It can be treated effectively if it\u2019s detected early enough, otherwise those with the disease may develop severe and long-lasting symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lymediseaseuk.com\/2015\/11\/23\/fight-lyme-now-campaign-goes-live\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fight Lyme Now<\/a> campaign surveyed Lyme disease sufferers across the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11821 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/FightLyme-Now.png?resize=212%2C300\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/FightLyme-Now.png?w=212&amp;ssl=1 212w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/FightLyme-Now.png?resize=106%2C150&amp;ssl=1 106w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 212px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 212\/300;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It found almost one in five of those who had a laboratory test on the NHS tested positive for the \u2018infective agent\u2019 of Lyme disease after receiving a diagnosis of a different condition previously.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the alternative conditions people had been diagnosed with were chronic fatigue syndrome, psychiatric disorders, autoimmune diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;The overall finding is that there are a lot of people out there with conditions that might actually be infected by the&#8230;
