{"id":14504,"date":"2017-09-29T08:04:09","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T08:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=14504"},"modified":"2017-10-09T02:35:18","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T02:35:18","slug":"me-costs-uk-economy-over-3-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/me-costs-uk-economy-over-3-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"ME costs UK economy over \u00a33 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Action for M.E.<\/strong> blog post, 28 Sep 2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionforme.org.uk\/news\/me-costs-uk-economy-over-%C2%A33-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ME costs UK economy over \u00a33 billion<\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>M.E. cost the UK economy at least \u00a33.3 billion in 2014\/15, according to a research report published today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The figures account for healthcare costs, disability-related welfare payments, productivity losses and unpaid informal care.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14507 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cost-of-ME-AfME-2017.jpg?resize=880%2C184\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"184\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cost-of-ME-AfME-2017.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cost-of-ME-AfME-2017.jpg?resize=150%2C31&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cost-of-ME-AfME-2017.jpg?resize=300%2C63&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Cost-of-ME-AfME-2017.jpg?resize=768%2C161&amp;ssl=1 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 880px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 880\/184;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Funded by the Optimum Health Clinic Foundation, and undertaken by the 2020health thinktank, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoptimumhealthclinic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Counting-the-Cost.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Counting the cost<\/a> report refers to the condition as \u201cthe health scandal of our generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the launch of the report in London this morning, attending by our Head of Communications and Policy, Clare Ogden, Chair of the Optimum Health Clinic Foundation, David Butcher, shared his personal experience of M.E., and explained the rationale for funding this study.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe need to understand every detail of these costs, to provide a solid platform on which to have a sensible debate,\u201d he said. \u201cWe also need a sense of urgency for research to prevent the lives of those with M.E. being needlessly wasted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Presenting an overview of her team\u2019s findings, 2020health\u2019s Julia Manning highlighted the considerable disparity of NHS spending on M.E. compared to other chronic, debilitating conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cA stronger commitments to research is needed in recognition of the substantial costs of CFS\/M.E. to the UK,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Penny Mordant MP, Minister of State for the Department for Work and Pensions, commended the report, and spoke in more general terms about the challenges facing those with long-term conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cConditions which are hard to diagnose, are fluctuating, are hidden, are a massive challenge to great big governmental systems,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cHow do we offer personalised support to an individual? We will fail if we try and fit them into an existing system. Good quality, early interventions are key to building support which is sustainable, to really anticipate what someone needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report described its research as<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201ca comprehensive UK cost-of-illness study of CFS\/M.E., based on recorded patient data from both specialised services and primary care&#8230;with little data on welfare payments received by recruited patients, we also contacted the DWP for estimates on ESA and PIP payments to people with CFS\/M.E. as a primary disabling condition.
