{"id":14930,"date":"2017-11-20T08:10:19","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T08:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=14930"},"modified":"2017-11-20T08:10:19","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T08:10:19","slug":"a-groundbreaking-discovery-could-ease-symptoms-for-millions-suffering-from-chronic-fatigue-fm-ibs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/a-groundbreaking-discovery-could-ease-symptoms-for-millions-suffering-from-chronic-fatigue-fm-ibs\/","title":{"rendered":"A groundbreaking discovery could ease symptoms for millions suffering from chronic fatigue, FM &#038; IBS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>WTVFN<\/strong> blog post, 17 Nov 2017: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wftv.com\/news\/trending-now\/massachusetts-researchers-make-major-discovery-about-ibs-fibromyalgia\/649115087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massachusetts researchers make major discovery about IBS, fibromyalgia<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have made a\u00a0groundbreaking discovery\u00a0that could ease symptoms for millions of people suffering from conditions such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/doctors\/doctor.aspx?id=17253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14931 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dr-Anne-Louise-Oaklander-300x214.jpg?resize=300%2C214\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dr-Anne-Louise-Oaklander.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dr-Anne-Louise-Oaklander.jpg?resize=150%2C107&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Dr-Anne-Louise-Oaklander.jpg?w=350&amp;ssl=1 350w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/214;\" \/>Dr. Anne Louise Oaklander<\/a> said a good proportion of patients diagnosed with those health issues may actually have a disease called small fiber polyneuropathy, or SFPN.<\/p>\n<p>This is a disorder in which nerve cells found under the skin are attacked by the body&#8217;s immune system.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting damage can cause numerous symptoms, including gastrointestinal discomfort and feeling like the skin is on fire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe problem is their skin looks perfectly normal, and there&#8217;s no evidence that anything&#8217;s wrong,\u201d Oaklander said.<\/p>\n<p>Along with others, Oaklander recently published a study in which they found that drugs called immunomodulators can be effectively used to treat SFPN, though these drugs may not work in every patient because every presentation of the disorder is different.<\/p>\n<p>She said patients who learn they have SFPN often feel liberated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s pretty routine that I have patients who break down and cry when they get an answer for the first time to something that&#8217;s been disabling them for years or decades,\u201d Oaklander said.<\/p>\n<p>One of those patients is MaryEllen Talbot, who had initially been diagnosed with fibromyalgia before learning she actually has SFPN.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThis diagnosis is from a biopsy, so it&#8217;s not subjective, it&#8217;s objective. It&#8217;s something they see on the lab,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Talbot isn\u2019t alone. Because of the varying symptoms from case to case, Oaklander said the number of people with SFPN could be huge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cMaybe it&#8217;s tens of millions of people around the world who have it, maybe it&#8217;s hundreds of millions of people, but either way this is not a rare disease,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Medical xpress<\/strong>, 8 Nov 2017: <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2017-11-autoimmunity-underlie-newly-painful-nerve-damage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Autoimmunity may underlie newly discovered painful nerve-damage disorder<\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The team examined medical records for 55 patients who met their criteria for SFPN diagnosis, had no evidence of non-immune causes and who were treated at MGH with intravenous immunoglobulin at a starting dose of 2 grams per kilogram of weight every four weeks. All but four were treated for at least three months, the others discontinuing because of side effects. The team studied nine types of follow-up data, all of which showed improvement &#8211; 74 percent of the 51 patients rated their symptoms as improved after treatment, as did 77 percent of their physicians.
