American Tom Hennessey chose the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, as she was stricken by an ME-type illness in her 30s and was often bed-ridden during the rest of her life.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8136 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/blue-ribbon-photo.gif?resize=90%2C180\" alt=\"blue ribbon photo\" width=\"90\" height=\"180\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 90px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 90\/180;\" \/><\/strong><strong>Blue Ribbon for ME<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Awareness raising got a\u00a0focus in the UK in 1995 with the start of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brame.org\/productssimple3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BRAME<\/a> (Blue Ribbon Awareness for the awareness of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis).<\/p>\n<p>The colour Blue continued to feature as once a year people died their hair blue, wore blue clothes or lit up public buildings with blue lights.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Letter writing &amp; the media<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the early days\u00a0 a small number of people were\u00a0interviewed by the media for news features on May 12th and campaign organisers\u00a0invited patients and carers to write letters to politician, health professionals and the media.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Social media<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-16503 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/thunderclap-150x150.png?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/thunderclap.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/thunderclap.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/thunderclap.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/>With the increasing popularity of social media many more people, including those who were housebound with ME were able to add blue ribbons, or <a href=\"https:\/\/twibbon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twibbons<\/a> to their social media pages. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thunderclap.it\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thunderclaps<\/a> became popular as a way\u00a0for a single message to be mass-shared, flash mob-style. Some\u00a0wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog<\/a> posts (short for weblog) about their experiences of ME\u00a0to be published on their own and other people&#8217;s blogs\u00a0and Facebook pages.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hashtag campaigns<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>No campaign takes place these days without a hashtag.
