Research has shown an increased suicide rate in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis and chronic fatigue syndrome, but specific risk factors have been unexplored. We qualitatively analyzed responses from 29 patients who endorsed suicidal ideation but did not meet depression criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Two themes were developed:<\/p>\n<p>(1) feeling trapped and<\/p>\n<p>(2) loss of self, loss of others, stigma and conflict.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16276 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pain-300x140.jpg?resize=300%2C140\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"140\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pain.jpg?resize=300%2C140&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pain.jpg?resize=150%2C70&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/pain.jpg?w=546&amp;ssl=1 546w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/140;\" \/>Myalgic encephalomyelitis and chronic fatigue syndrome caused patients severe disability, restructured their lives, and inflicted serious pain.
