In this study, we aimed to identify<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transcriptome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> transcriptome<\/a> profiles that could aid to better understand the pathophysiology of QFS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methods:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4880326\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RNA<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monocyte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">monocytes<\/a> was collected from QFS patients (n\u2009=\u200910), chronic fatigue syndrome patients (CFS, n\u2009=\u200910), Q fever seropositive controls (n\u2009=\u200910), and healthy controls (n\u2009=\u200910) who were age- (\u00b1\u20095 years) and sex-matched. Transcriptome analysis was performed using RNA sequencing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP)-coding genes MT-RNR2 (humanin) and MT-RNR1 (MOTS-c) were differentially expressed when comparing QFS (\u2212 4.8 log2-fold-change P\u2009=\u20092.19\u2009\u00d7\u200910\u22129 and \u2212 4.9 log2-fold-change P\u2009=\u20094.69\u2009\u00d7\u200910\u22128), CFS (\u2212 5.2 log2-fold-change, P\u2009=3.49\u2009\u00d7\u200910\u221211 \u2212 4.4 log2-fold-change, P\u2009=\u20092.71\u2009\u00d7\u200910\u22129), and Q fever seropositive control (\u2212 3.7 log2-fold-change P\u2009=\u20091.78\u2009\u00d7\u200910\u22126 and \u2212 3.2 log2-fold-change P\u2009=\u20091.12 \u00d7 10\u22125) groups with healthy controls, resulting in a decreased median production of humanin in QFS patients (371 pg\/mL; Interquartile range, IQR, 325\u2013384), CFS patients (364 pg\/mL; IQR 316\u2013387), and asymptomatic Q fever seropositive controls (354 pg\/mL; 292\u2013393).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Expression of MDP-coding genes MT-RNR1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/phoenixpeptide.com\/topics\/detail\/164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MOTS-c<\/a>) and MT-RNR2 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Humanin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humanin<\/a>) is decreased in CFS, QFS, and, to a lesser extent, in Q fever seropositive controls, resulting in a decreased production of humanin.
