Abstract
\n<\/strong>\"\"<\/a>In this article, we draw on the narrative of a woman who has recovered from\u00a0chronic fatigue syndrome\u00a0(CFS) to explore the process of recovering from a debilitating illness.<\/p>\n

Inspired by Julia Kristeva<\/a>\u2019s notion of the body as a complex biocultural fact and by Karen Barad\u2019<\/a>s posthuman theory (also termed agential realism<\/a>), we adopt an intra-active approach to the woman\u2019s recovery process, revealing the role played by\u00a0human\u00a0as well as\u00a0nonhuman\u00a0entities.<\/p>\n

In so doing, we move beyond \u201cdualistic,\u201d often polarized debates in the medical literature (and mainstream media) regarding the causes of CFS: debates in which \u201cbiological\/ physiological\u201d factors tend to be set against \u201cmental\/cognitive\/psychological\u201d ones. We argue for a medical perspective in which the intra-action<\/a> of human and nonhuman agents is recognized as contributing to an individual\u2019s recovery process.<\/p>\n
