It has previously been shown that CFS skeletal muscle cells have lower levels of ATP and have AMP-activated protein kinase dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-28556 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/muscle.png?resize=400%2C214&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"214\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/muscle.png?resize=300%2C160&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/muscle.png?resize=150%2C80&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/muscle.png?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/214;\" \/>This study outlines experiments looking at the utilisation of different substrates by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skeletal_muscle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skeletal muscle cells<\/a> from CFS patients (n=9) and healthy controls (n=11) using extracellular flux analysis. Results show that CFS skeletal muscle cells are unable to utilise glucose to the same extent as healthy control cells. CFS skeletal muscle cells were shown to oxidise galactose and fatty acids normally, indicating that the bioenergetic dysfunction lies upstream of the TCA cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The dysfunction in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3rd1000.com\/chem301\/chem302x.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">glucose oxidation<\/a> is similar to what has previously been shown in blood cells from CFS patients. The consistency of cellular bioenergetic dysfunction in different\u00a0 cell types supports the hypothesis that CFS is a systemic\u00a0 disease.
