Postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) include injury to the lungs, heart, kidneys, and brain that may produce a variety of symptoms. PASC also includes a post\u2013coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) syndrome (\u2018long COVID\u2019) with features that can follow other acute infectious diseases and myalgic encephalomyelitis\/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME\/CFS).<\/p>\n<p>Here we summarize what is known about the pathogenesis of ME\/CFS and of \u2018acute\u2019 COVID-19, and we speculate that the pathogenesis of post\u2013COVID-19 syndrome in some people may be similar to that of ME\/CFS.<\/p>\n<p>We propose molecular mechanisms that might explain the fatigue and related symptoms in both illnesses, and we suggest a research agenda for both ME\/CFS and post\u2013COVID-19 syndrome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comment from Health rising<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthrising.org\/blog\/2021\/06\/10\/insights-chronic-fatigue-syndrone-long-covid5802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Experts Assert Insights From ME\/CFS Needed to Understand Long COVID<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">We\u2019re just beginning to learn about long COVID, but some possible connections have shown up. Besides the wide overlap in symptoms, the mixed results from attempts to find evidence of the virus in the central nervous system suggest that it\u2019s the \u201chost response to the virus and\u00a0microvascular damage\u201d occurring from that \u2013 rather than the direct effects of the virus \u2013 that is probably causing symptoms. Indeed, they believe the virus probably does much of its damage via its effects on the\u00a0vascular system (blood vessels).
