[DOI: 10.29328\/journal.jprr.1001020]<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Review abstract:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a poorly-understood respiratory condition that affects millions of individuals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/313155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyperbaric oxygen therapy<\/a> (HBOT) is a treatment option being considered to address CFS as it is suggested to combat fatigue and increase oxygenation.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-32535 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HyperBaric_Oxygen_Therapy_Chamber_2008.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HyperBaric_Oxygen_Therapy_Chamber_2008.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HyperBaric_Oxygen_Therapy_Chamber_2008.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HyperBaric_Oxygen_Therapy_Chamber_2008.jpg?resize=150%2C113&amp;ssl=1 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 640\/480;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>HBOT provides two opportunities in advancing research of CFS:\u00a0it may provide data on symptom amelioration and be utilized in the search for a <a href=\"https:\/\/me-pedia.org\/wiki\/Diagnostic_biomarker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biomarker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By either identifying biomarkers before using HBOT to compare epigenomes of patients before and after treatment or using HBOT to find <a href=\"https:\/\/me-pedia.org\/wiki\/Epigenetics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epigenetic<\/a> discrepancies between patients with and without treatment, matching epigenetic regulation with symptom amelioration may significantly advance the understanding of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/etiology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">etiology<\/a> and treatment mechanism for CFS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EPAS1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPAS1\/HIF-2\u03b1<\/a> is a leading candidate for an epigenetic biomarker as it responds differentially to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypoxia_(medical)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypoxic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/normoxic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">normoxic<\/a> conditions, which degrades more slowly in hypoxic conditions. Epigenetic regulation of EPAS1\/HIF-2\u03b1 in<br \/>\nsuch differential conditions may be explored in HBOT experiments.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to HBOT as a promising treatment option for CFS symptoms, it may aid the identification of biomarkers in CFS.
