Although neurological and cognitive aberrations have been consistently reported, relatively little is known regarding the regional <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cerebral_circulation#:~:text=Cerebral%20blood%20flow%20(CBF)%20is,of%20brain%20tissue%20per%20minute.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cerebral blood flow<\/a> (rCBF) in ME\/CFS.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-33614 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Brain_regions_in_memory_formation_updated.jpg?resize=350%2C242&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"242\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 350px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 350\/242;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this study, we studied a cohort of 31 ME\/CSF patients (average age: 42.8 \u00b1 13.5 years) and 48 healthy controls (average age: 42.9 \u00b1 12.0 years) using the pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (<a href=\"https:\/\/mriquestions.com\/pcasl.html#:~:text=pCASL%20uses%20a%20narrow%20labeling,the%20decay%20of%20labeled%20blood.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PCASL<\/a>) technique on a whole-body clinical <a href=\"http:\/\/cdiok.com\/?page_id=14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3T MRI scanner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Besides routine clinical MRI, the protocol included a session of over 8 min-long rCBF measurement. The differences in the rCBF between the ME\/CSF patients and healthy controls were statistically assessed with voxel-wise and AAL ROI-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmp.com\/en_gb\/statistics-knowledge-portal\/t-test\/two-sample-t-test.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two-sample t-tests<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statisticssolutions.com\/free-resources\/directory-of-statistical-analyses\/what-is-linear-regression\/#:~:text=Linear%20regression%20is%20a%20basic%20and%20commonly%20used%20type%20of%20predictive%20analysis.&amp;text=These%20regression%20estimates%20are%20used,one%20or%20more%20independent%20variables.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linear regression analysis<\/a> was also performed on the rCBF data by using the symptom severity score as the main regressor.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Hypoperfusion<\/strong> is a term that describes &#8220;a reduced amount of blood flow&#8221;<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In comparison with the healthy controls, the patient group showed significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lhsc.on.ca\/critical-care-trauma-centre\/critical-care-trauma-centre-181#:~:text=Hypoperfusion%20is%20a%20term%20that,any%20organ%20of%20the%20body.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypoperfusion<\/a> (uncorrected voxel wise\u00a0p\u00a0\u2264 0.001, FWE\u00a0p\u00a0\u2264 0.01) in several brain regions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/qbi.uq.edu.au\/brain\/brain-anatomy\/limbic-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">limbic system<\/a>, including the anterior cingulate cortex, putamen, pallidum, and anterior ventral insular area. For the ME\/CFS patients, the overall symptom severity score at rest was significantly associated with a reduced rCBF in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anterior_cingulate_cortex#:~:text=In%20the%20human%20brain%2C%20the,24%2C%2032%2C%20and%2033.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anterior cingulate cortex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>In the human brain, the <strong>anterior cingulate cortex<\/strong> (ACC) is involved in certain higher-level functions, such as attention allocation, reward anticipation, decision-making, ethics and morality, impulse control (e.g. performance monitoring and error detection), and emotion.
