{"id":3358,"date":"2014-07-12T06:45:17","date_gmt":"2014-07-12T06:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=3358"},"modified":"2014-07-12T06:50:11","modified_gmt":"2014-07-12T06:50:11","slug":"flowers-in-the-blood-abnormally-shaped-red-blood-cells-in-cfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/flowers-in-the-blood-abnormally-shaped-red-blood-cells-in-cfs\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Flowers&#8217; in the blood &#8211; abnormally shaped red blood cells in CFS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CASE REPORT\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Abstract<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Introduction: <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chronic fatigue syndrome is a debilitating condition characterized by persistent fatigue, post-exertional malaise, myalgia, arthralgia, lymph node tenderness, impaired memory and concentration, autonomic irregularities, and other specific symptoms affecting multiple body systems. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Diverse hypotheses have been investigated to ascertain the disease etiology. Some of these include metabolic and mitochondrial deficiencies, exposure to environmental toxins, dysautonomia associated with orthostatic intolerance, autoimmune reactions, neuroendocrine aberrations, and chronic viral infections.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, a consistently observed biomarker for chronic fatigue has not been identified. A comprehensive, standardized strategy for accurate diagnosis and successful treatment remains elusive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Case Report:<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A 28-year-old Caucasian female presented with chronic fatigue persisting for nine months following infectious mononucleosis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Laboratory evaluation excluded classic causes of fatigue. Peri<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pheral blood smear examination revealed numerous pairs of unusual nondiscocytic C-shaped <a title=\"erythrocyte\" href=\"http:\/\/medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com\/erythrocyte\" target=\"_blank\">erythrocytes<\/a> [red blood cells], coupled in perpendicular crosses resembling four-petalled flowers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The presence of the erythrocyte pairs abated with the patient\u2019s recovery from chronic fatigue syndrome over a 24-month period. This erythrocyte arrangement has not been reported elsewhere in medical literature. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conclusion:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> A novel erythrocyte \u201cflower\u201d formation was identified in a patient with chronic fatigue syndrome. The presence of this arrangement paralleled the course of the illness and was no longer observed upon recovery.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The physiological relevance of the structure remains a subject for future research.
