The clinical presentation and neuroimaging aspects of patients suffering from this condition are remarkably\u00a0similar to\u00a0those seen in patients with\u00a0Myalgic\u00a0Encephalomyelitis\/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME\/CFS). Inflammation, immune\u00a0disorder\u00a0and oxidative damage have been documented to cause metabolic deregulation with decreased glycolysis and impaired mitochondrial function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Purpose of the study:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-18594 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/freeimage-4945491.jpg?resize=350%2C233&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/freeimage-4945491.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/freeimage-4945491.jpg?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/freeimage-4945491.jpg?resize=768%2C511&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/freeimage-4945491.jpg?resize=1024%2C681&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/freeimage-4945491.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 350px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 350\/233;\" \/>It is suggested that these alterations may be improved by the oral administration of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nutraceutical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nutraceutical<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meldonium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meldonium<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dichloroacetic_acid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sodium dichloroacetate<\/a> (group designated as \u201coral treatment\u201d; n=79) or intermittent intravenous infusions of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magnesium_sulfate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">magnesium sulphat<\/a>e together with multivitamins and <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002222.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">essential amino acids<\/a> (group designated as \u201cinfusion treatment\u201d, n=18).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials and methods:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>97 patients suffering from ME\/CFS (n=79) or post-COVID syndrome (n=9) were included in a pragmatic prospective <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open-label_trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open-label trial<\/a> using either oral or infusion therapy for 1 month, and the effect of treatment was assessed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physio-pedia.com\/Fatigue_Severity_Scale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fatigue Severity Scale<\/a> (FSS).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Upon interim analysis of 97 cases of ME\/CFS and\/or Post-COVID-19 syndrome therapeutic approach by either the oral or the infusion therapy was found to result in a reduction of the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) in two thirds of patients. The quotient of FSS after treatment divided by the FSS before treatment decreased by an average for all 97 cases by 14% within\u00a0one month, with no difference between oral and infusion therapy (P=0.70), nor between the ME\/CFS patient (mean quotient: 0.85, SD: 0.16) and the post-COVID cases (quotient: 0.87, SD: 0.16). Among the successful cases the FSS decreased by an average of 31%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Preliminary results of the oral and the infusion therapy suggest a similar beneficial effect on fatigue in a substantial proportion of patients suffering from ME\/CFS or Post-COVID syndrome.
