Pre-pandemic an estimated <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>13,000<\/strong><\/span> people in Wales had Myalgic Encephalomelitis (ME), making ME one of the largest neurological patient communities in the country. COVID-19 could increase that number to <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">31,000.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most people with ME remember having a virus. Some were really ill and never fully recovered. Others recovered from the virus after a few weeks, only to collapse again later. Many cannot identify the virus they had, or, like some with COVID, hardly noticed a virus had infected them, but others were tested and given confirmation of a variety of infections e.g. Epstein Barr, Herpes, enteroviruses, Park virus B19 or the previous coronavirus, sars-cov-2.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-30040 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/man-window-long-COVID.jpg?resize=300%2C171&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/man-window-long-COVID.jpg?resize=300%2C171&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/man-window-long-COVID.jpg?resize=1024%2C585&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/man-window-long-COVID.jpg?resize=150%2C86&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/man-window-long-COVID.jpg?resize=768%2C439&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/man-window-long-COVID.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/171;\" \/>COVID is also a trigger for ME\/CFS. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/374\/bmj.n1995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Researchers estimate<\/a> that 25% of people who experienced ongoing symptoms following the previous COVID outbreak, SARS-CoV, met the criteria for ME.\u00a0 46% with long COVID today could develop ME, say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/long-covid-patients-may-have-chronic-fatigue-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US researchers.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to figures gathered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/conditionsanddiseases\/bulletins\/prevalenceofongoingsymptomsfollowingcoronaviruscovid19infectionintheuk\/6may2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ONS<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">88,760 people in Wales have long COVID<br \/>\n39,015 people have been ill for 1 year+<br \/>\n11,540 have been ill for 2 years+<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the predictions are correct, up to 18,000 people could have joined the ME community in Wales, bringing the patient population to an estimated 31,000 people.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WAMES has been campaigning for decades for safe, empathetic &amp; equitable healthcare and with the new focus on post-viral illness there is a real opportunity now for NHS Wales to end the \u2018health and social care crisis\u2018 for people with ME\/CFS in Wales.<\/p>\n<p>WAMES is therefore asking the NHS and health professionals in Wales <a href=\"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/implement-nice-me-cfs-guideline-for-safe-empathetic-equitable-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>not to delay any\u00a0longer<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>follow the science<\/li>\n<li>listen to patients and carers<\/li>\n<li>learn to diagnose ME\/CFS: Debilitating fatigue + Post-exertional malaise + Sleep disturbance + Cognitive difficulties<\/li>\n<li>begin the process of developing a safe, empathetic and equitable healthcare service for people with ME\/CFS<\/li>\n<li>no delay \u2013 begin to implement the 2021 NICE ME\/CFS guideline today!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#ImplementNICEmecfs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/what-should-health-professionals-learnfromme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>What should health professionals #LearnFromME?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World ME Day &#8211; 12 May 2022 &#8211; a time to #LearnFromME and #ImplementNICEmecfs &nbsp; Could 31,000 people in Wales have ME?
