{"id":35935,"date":"2022-07-27T08:40:09","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T07:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=35935"},"modified":"2022-07-27T08:41:03","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T07:41:03","slug":"research-metabolomic-evidence-for-peroxisomal-dysfunction-in-me-cfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/research-metabolomic-evidence-for-peroxisomal-dysfunction-in-me-cfs\/","title":{"rendered":"Research: Metabolomic evidence for peroxisomal dysfunction in ME\/CFS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/23\/14\/7906\/htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Metabolomic evidence for peroxisomal dysfunction in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis\/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Research conclusion:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Our findings provide the first <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metabolomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metabolomic<\/a> evidence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peroxisomal_disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peroxisomal dysfunction<\/a>, and are consistent with dysregulation of <a href=\"https:\/\/study.com\/learn\/lesson\/lipids-function-facts-importance-body.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lipid<\/a> remodeling and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/krebs-cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tricarboxylic acid cycle.<\/a> These findings, if validated in other cohorts, could provide new insights into the pathogenesis of ME\/CFS and highlight the potential use of the plasma <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/life-sciences\/The-Metabolome-An-Overview.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metabolome<\/a> as a source of biomarkers for the disease.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Peroxisomes are small structures (organelles) inside a cell that perform specific functions to keep that cell alive. Using regression, Bayesian and enrichment analyses, we conducted targeted and untargeted metabolomic analysis of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blood_plasma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plasma<\/a> from 106 ME\/CFS cases and 91 frequency-matched healthy controls.<\/p>\n<p>Subjects in the ME\/CFS group had significantly decreased levels of plasmalogens and phospholipid ethers (p&lt;0.001), phosphatidylcholines (p&lt;0.001) and sphingomyelins (p&lt;0.001), and elevated levels of dicarboxylic acids (p=0.013).
