{"id":40847,"date":"2023-09-21T07:25:37","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T06:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=40847"},"modified":"2023-09-21T07:25:37","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T06:25:37","slug":"mea-finds-low-opinion-of-nhs-services-for-me-in-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/mea-finds-low-opinion-of-nhs-services-for-me-in-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"MEA finds low opinion of NHS services for ME in Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>MEA <em>Count ME In<\/em> survey of\u00a0 health and social care for ME\/CFS and Long COVID\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-40850 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/MEA-Count-ME-bed.png?resize=300%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/169;\" \/>7,303 people in the UK completed the ME Association&#8217;s survey:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>85% (6,208 people) had a diagnosis of ME\/CFS<\/li>\n<li>10% (730) had a diagnosis of Long Covid<\/li>\n<li>5% (365 people) were undiagnosed but experienced the 4 core symptoms of ME\/CFS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In general, experiences with the NHS were more likely to be rated poor than good and were worse for ME\/CFS than Long Covid:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 8% of those with ME\/CFS rated the NHS as good or excellent, and with Long Covid it was 15%.<\/li>\n<li>Top barriers to good care were long waiting times, not being listened to or believed, and ineffective treatments.<\/li>\n<li>Every region in the UK scored badly. More than 50% of regions received a very poor or poor opinion. Wales, Northern Ireland, West Midlands, Southeast England, and Scotland received over 65%.<\/li>\n<li>There are many barriers to receiving a timely diagnosis \u2013 the main ones being that people were diagnosed with a different condition, not being referred to specialists by GPs, long waits for tests or referrals, and not being taken<br \/>\nseriously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>In Wales<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>69% of survey participants said that the support they had received from the NHS for ME\/CFS was poor or very poor.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40851 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ME-Count-me-in-NHS-e1695136798174.jpg?resize=800%2C381&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"381\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/381;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Only 35% of Welsh participants found the specialist services for ME\/CFS to be good or excellent [We don&#8217;t know what these &#8216;specialist services&#8217; in Wales were!]<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40852 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/MEA-Count-me-in-specialists-e1695137532700.jpg?resize=800%2C381&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"381\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/381;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>WAMES will be bringing these results to the attention of the Health Boards in Wales as they work to develop services for people with ME\/CFS.
