They also found distinct differences between men and women with the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Brain scans showed that people with ME\/CFS had lower activity in a brain region called the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ), which may cause fatigue by disrupting the way the brain decides how to exert effort.<\/p>\n<p>They also analysed spinal fluid and found abnormally low levels of catecholamines and other molecules that help regulate the nervous system in people with ME\/CFS.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42279 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nath-2024.jpg?resize=723%2C692&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"723\" height=\"692\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nath-2024.jpg?w=723&amp;ssl=1 723w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nath-2024.jpg?resize=300%2C287&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Nath-2024.jpg?resize=150%2C144&amp;ssl=1 150w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 723px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 723\/692;\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-45107-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deep phenotyping of post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis\/ chronic fatigue syndrome<\/a>, by Avindra Nath et al <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in<\/span> <em>Nature Communications<\/em> vol 15, no. 907 (2024)<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Research abstract:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis\/chronic fatigue syndrome (PI-ME\/CFS) is a disabling disorder, yet the clinical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genome.gov\/genetics-glossary\/Phenotype#:~:text=Phenotype%20refers%20to%20an%20individual%27s,eye%20color%20and%20blood%20type.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phenotype<\/a> is poorly defined, the pathophysiology is unknown, and no disease-modifying treatments are available.<\/p>\n<p>We used rigorous criteria to recruit PI-ME\/CFS participants with matched controls to conduct deep phenotyping. Among the many physical and cognitive complaints, one defining feature of PI-ME\/CFS was an alteration of effort preference, rather than physical or central fatigue, due to dysfunction of integrative brain regions potentially associated with central catechol pathway dysregulation, with consequences on autonomic functioning and physical conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>Immune profiling suggested chronic antigenic stimulation with increase in na\u00efve and decrease in switched memory B-cells.
