{"id":5966,"date":"2015-09-30T09:36:11","date_gmt":"2015-09-30T09:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=5966"},"modified":"2015-10-09T09:39:15","modified_gmt":"2015-10-09T09:39:15","slug":"act-for-cfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/act-for-cfs\/","title":{"rendered":"ACT (Acceptance and commitment therapy) for CFS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Research abstract:<\/h3>\n<p>Acceptance is understood to be an important element in coping and\u00a0 living with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and chronic pain, and\u00a0increasing acceptance has been related to a number of positive\u00a0 outcomes such as reduced symptoms as well as greater reported quality\u00a0 of life.<\/p>\n<p>Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a disabling disorder that\u00a0is associated with poor reported quality of life even in comparison to\u00a0others chronic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Given that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acceptance_and_commitment_therapy\" target=\"_blank\">ACT (Acceptance and commitment therapy)<\/a>\u00a0is a psychotherapeutic model\u00a0aimed at increasing psychological flexibility and values pursuance,\u00a0the approach holds potential for coping and living with CFS, with\u00a0interesting implications for service provision and client care.<\/p>\n<p>We utilized a six-week guided self-help ACT intervention with six\u00a0detailed case studies to assess the utility of an ACT self-help\u00a0intervention for this under-researched population, and whether any\u00a0therapeutic and physical change is driven by predicted ACT mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>These results are discussed in relation to ACT processes and\u00a0implications for working with individuals with a diagnosis of CFS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eprints.lincoln.ac.uk\/18874\/\" target=\"_blank\">ACT for chronic fatigue syndrome: a case series approach<\/a>, by Lauren Roche, Dave Dawson, Nima Moghaddam, Mark Gresswell.
