{"id":9134,"date":"2016-07-22T07:07:24","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T07:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=9134"},"modified":"2016-07-22T07:07:24","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T07:07:24","slug":"assessing-reduction-in-activity-levels-in-mecfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/assessing-reduction-in-activity-levels-in-mecfs\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessing reduction in activity levels in ME\/CFS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Research abstract:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Background:\u00a0<\/strong>Myalgic encephalomyelitis and chronic fatigue syndrome have case definitions with varying criteria, but almost all criteria require an individual to have a substantial reduction in activity level.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, a consensus has not been reached regarding what constitutes substantial reductions.<\/p>\n<p>One measure that has been used to measure substantial reduction is the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36). [1]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Purpose:\u00a0<\/strong>The current study examined the relationship between the SF-36, a measure of current functioning, and a self-report measure of the percent reduction in hours spent on activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:\u00a0<\/strong>Findings indicated that select subscales of the SF-36 accurately measure significant reductions in functioning.<\/p>\n<p>Further, this measure significantly differentiates patients from controls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:\u00a0<\/strong>Determining what constitutes a significant reduction in activity is difficult because it is subjective to the individual.<\/p>\n<p>However, certain subscales of the SF-36 could provide a uniform way to accurately measure and define substantial reductions in functioning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/21641846.2016.1206176?journalCode=rftg20\" target=\"_blank\">Assessing current functioning as a measure of significant reduction in activity level<\/a>, by\u00a0Taylor Thorpe, Stephanie McManimen, Kristen Gleason, Jamie Stoothoff, Julia L.
