{"id":9517,"date":"2016-08-23T07:23:04","date_gmt":"2016-08-23T07:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=9517"},"modified":"2016-08-23T07:25:08","modified_gmt":"2016-08-23T07:25:08","slug":"9-potential-diagnostic-tests-for-mecfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/9-potential-diagnostic-tests-for-mecfs\/","title":{"rendered":"9 potential diagnostic tests for ME\/CFS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>shoutoutaboutme<\/strong> blog post, by Russell Logan, 31 July 2016: 9 potential diagnostic tests for ME\/CFS: Highlights of the IACFS submission to NIH RFI on new research strategies<\/p>\n<p>Though\u00a0there are as yet\u00a0no readily available, well-accepted, objective diagnostic tests for ME\u00a0and\u00a0CFS, work is ongoing\u00a0in several key areas to develop\u00a0one.<\/p>\n<p>One objective measure,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoutoutaboutme.com\/testing\/the-2-day-cpet-a-gold-standard-test-for-mecfs\/\" target=\"_blank\">2-day CPET<\/a>,\u00a0is gaining\u00a0acceptance\u00a0and has been used with success in legal presentations. A drawback to this measure is its\u00a0potential for harming patients.<\/p>\n<p>And there are good\u00a0subjective or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoutoutaboutme.com\/symptoms\/two-subjective-measures-of-incapacity-in-cfs\/\" target=\"_blank\">self-reported diagnostic measures<\/a>, though these are of limited value in clinical diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>In its response\u00a0to the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-NS-16-024.html\" target=\"_blank\">NIH solicitation for input into new research strategies <\/a>for ME\/CFS,\u00a0the International Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome\/ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (IACFS\/ME) documented\u00a0emerging opportunities, research needs, and continuing challenges, but in particular highlighted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/research-training\/initiatives\/mecfs\/rfi-healthcare-professionals-researchers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">promising work on developing a diagostic test or biological marker<\/a>\u00a0for the illness.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/iacfsme.org\" target=\"_blank\">IACFS\/ME <\/a>authors\u00a0\u2014 Lily Chu, Fred Friedberg, Staci Stevens, \u00a0Steve Krafchick, and\u00a0Jon Kaiser \u2014 noted: \u201cSome tests might not be suitable for clinical use but might provide a gold standard test for research purposes [and] may also provide clues to the pathophysiology of this disease and even to future treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;They identified 9\u00a0key\u00a0areas of\u00a0investigation requiring\u00a0urgent need of government support and funding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoutoutaboutme.com\/testing\/emerging-diagnostic-tests-for-mecfs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a> about these key areas of investigation into testing for ME and CFS.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LOW NATURAL KILLER CELL ACTIVITY<\/li>\n<li>2-DAY REPEATED CARDIOPULMONARY EXERCISE TESTING<\/li>\n<li>NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING RELATED TO INFORMATION PROCESSING<\/li>\n<li>TILT TABLE TESTING<\/li>\n<li>NEUROINFLAMMATION<\/li>\n<li>UNREFRESHING SLEEP, HEART RATE VARIABILITY, AND SYMPATHETIC PREDOMINANCE<\/li>\n<li>FAMILIAL STUDIES<\/li>\n<li>ENERGY METABOLISM ISSUES AND LACTATE PROCESSING IN MUSCLE AND BRAIN<\/li>\n<li>POST-INFECTIOUS TRIGGERS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>shoutoutaboutme blog post, by Russell Logan, 31 July 2016: 9 potential diagnostic tests for ME\/CFS: Highlights of the IACFS submission to NIH RFI on new research strategies Though\u00a0there are as yet\u00a0no readily available, well-accepted, objective diagnostic tests for ME\u00a0and\u00a0CFS, work &hellip;
