{"id":9958,"date":"2016-09-29T06:43:05","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T06:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/?p=9958"},"modified":"2016-09-29T06:43:05","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T06:43:05","slug":"obesity-in-adolescents-with-cfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wames.org.uk\/cms-english\/obesity-in-adolescents-with-cfs\/","title":{"rendered":"Obesity in adolescents with CFS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Research abstract:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong><br \/>\nIdentify the prevalence of obesity in patients with chronic fatigue\u00a0syndrome (CFS) compared with healthy adolescents, and those identified\u00a0with CFS in a population cohort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design:<\/strong><br \/>\nCross-sectional analysis of multiple imputed data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting:<\/strong><br \/>\nData from UK paediatric CFS\/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS\/ME) services\u00a0compared with data collected at two time points in the Avon Longitudinal\u00a0Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patients:<\/strong><br \/>\n1685 adolescents who attended a CFS\/ME specialist service between 2004\u00a0and 2014 and 13 978 adolescents aged approximately 13 years and 16 years\u00a0participating in the ALSPAC study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main outcome measures:<\/strong><br \/>\nBody mass index (BMI) (kg\/m2), sex-specific and age-specific BMI\u00a0Z-scores (relative to the International Obesity Task Force cut-offs) and\u00a0prevalence of obesity (%).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong><br \/>\nAdolescents who had attended specialist CFS\/ME services had a higher\u00a0prevalence of obesity (age 13 years: 9.28%; age 16 years: 16.43%)\u00a0compared with both adolescents classified as CFS\/ME in ALSPAC (age 13\u00a0years: 3.72%; age 16 years: 5.46%) and those non-CFS in ALSPAC (age 13\u00a0years: 4.18%; age 16 years: 4.46%).
