Successive British governments and other public bodies are failing to fulfill pledges they signed up to under a major international disability rights convention, campaigners have told a United Nations (UN) committee.

A range of disability rights groups have submitted a “shadow report” to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities after extensive consultation with disabled people.  Inclusion Scotland (and partners) led on the work carried out in Scotland.

The Government has rejected the findings of the UN report that austerity measures have disproportionately affected ill and disabled people. The report makes 11 recommendations, including calling on the government to carry out a study of the cumulative impact of all spending cuts on the disabled & to ensure human rights of disabled people are upheld.

Over 14,000 people have signed a petition asking the UK government to implement the recommendations, but 100, 000 signatures are needed before the government is forced to debate the issue in parliament.
